Trip Ideas NZ: A Family-Run Gateway to the Heart of Aotearoa

About Trip Ideas NZ

Trip Ideas NZ is a dedicated, family-operated travel resource founded by Douglas Paul, alongside his partner Melanie Tollemache and their daughters, Wyoming and Indigo. Built on decades of family road trips and a deep-seated passion for New Zealand’s remote “backroads,” the platform serves as an extensive guide for both “Kiwis” and international travelers. Whether navigating the high-alpine tracks of the South Island or the sandy beaches of the North, Trip Ideas NZ provides authentic, high-quality insights into the unique ecosystems and geography of Aotearoa.

From Paper Maps to Digital Storytelling

The germ of Trip Ideas NZ started decades ago, following dotted lines on paper maps through remote swathes of native bush. Today, that wealth of experience has been transformed into a modern digital journal. The platform’s mission is to help travelers establish a stronger connection with the whenua (land) through slow travel and authentic exploration. Codeflies collaborated with Trip Ideas NZ to build a clean, map-centric web architecture that organizes vast amounts of regional data. We focused on a user interface that allows travelers to easily navigate by region—from Northland to Southland—while ensuring that the rich, narrative-driven content from contributors like Mike Bilodeau remains the focal point of the experience.

"We have the best excuse to keep driving backroads looking for adventures. Our aim is to share our love of nature with you and offer the inspiration to get you started."

Our Project Challenges

1

Hiring the right team

Hiring the right people with just the right skills and experience in food e-commerce was essential to fulfill the nitty-gritty of the requirement and achieve desired results. Our team, with complete detailing, selected people that were not just experts in their respective fields but also highly professional and responsive to the client’s needs.

2

Reducing time to market
In order to handle competitive pressure, it was crucial to reduce the app’s time to market. To meet the need, we placed our team onsite to help bridge the gap in understanding the requirement and connect cross-functional teams to brainstorm the solution while keeping in mind the current legacy system and its limitations.

3

Offering high personalization
In order to make people order from the KFC food delivery application in place of aggregator apps, it was critical to double down on the customer experience. To achieve the same, we offered a high level of personalization in the app and made it easy for customers to view their order history and make payment through multiple gateway options.
1

Balancing High-Quality Visuals with Speed

Adventure travel relies on stunning photography to inspire. We helped Codeflies implement an optimized gallery system that showcases New Zealand's landscapes without compromising the site's performance for travelers using mobile data in remote areas.

2

Creating a Scalable Regional Directory

With nearly 20 distinct regions to cover, the navigation could easily have become cluttered. We designed a streamlined menu system that allows users to jump from "Nelson Tasman" to "Coromandel" in two clicks, making the massive resource feel accessible and manageable.

3

Integrating Practical Resources with Inspiration

A travel site needs to move a user from "inspiration" to "action." We built dedicated resource sections for Campervan hire, Accommodation, and Personal Safety, ensuring that once a traveler is inspired by a journal entry, they have the immediate tools to plan their trip safely.
